Richelle Mead Interview
HEA: Welcome back to HEA, Richelle! How many books are going to be in Bloodlines? Are there any other offshoots in the Vampire Academy world planned?
Richelle: The Bloodlines series will have six books in it, just like the first Vampire Academy series did. I'll most certainly be doing something else VA-related once I finish Bloodlines, but I haven't decided yet. I'm considering a few different things, and you can be sure I'm already seeding them in the current series!
HEA: Sydney seems to be growing stronger with every Bloodlines book. Is it difficult to write a character who has such a different tone from your usual butt-kicking heroines?
Richelle: No, not at all. In fact, Sydney's a little more realistic in some ways than Rose because I think most of us have to navigate the world with our wits and not superhuman fighting skills. That being said, Sydney's intelligence isn't exactly ordinary either! Sometimes it's difficult writing her flashes of brilliance because I don't think I'm as smart as her.
HEA: I bet your readers would beg to differ! Did you always know Adrian and Sydney were going to be love interests? Is Marcus going to be a contender later?
Richelle: Adrian and Sydney both notice each other in quick glimpses in the first Vampire Academy series and comment on the other's attractiveness. So, it was kicking around in my head even back then. As for what happens later, well …we'll have to keep reading! (And that's not a confirmation or a denial about Marcus — just me not giving away spoilers.) : )
HEA: That works for us! Have you considered doing any e-novellas telling different parts of the story from the POVs of other characters? We bet readers would love to see through Dimitri's eyes when he became a Strigoi and the first time he saw Rose.
Richelle: Readers would indeed love to hear Dimitri's POV! I get asked about it a lot, but I don't think it's something I'll ever do. Part of Dimitri's mystique is that we always wonder what's going on in his head. I'm not sure I'd want to ruin it! I would love to do little stories and whatnot set in the world, but at the moment, the main books take all my time, so that's what I've got to stick to for now.
HEA: How do you like the graphic novel version of the VA world? Are there more graphic novels coming?
Richelle: I love the VA graphic novels. The adapter and artist are fans of the books, which makes a huge impact. Shadow Kiss will be out at the end of this year, and I don't have dates on the others.
HEA: Please tell us more about The Indigo Spell.
Richelle: The Indigo Spell is the third book in the Bloodlines series. In it, Sydney finds herself caught up with a rebel Alchemist who wants her to help uncover the organization's secrets. As if that wasn't enough, she finds herself literally on a witch hunt with the ever-charming Adrian — who's continuing to stir up all sorts of conflicted feelings within her.
HEA: What can you tell us about The Fiery Heart, the next Bloodlines book, coming later this year?
Richelle: The Fiery Heart will be one of the most romantic and shocking books in the series. It focuses on the events that happen at the end of The Indigo Spell, examining Sydney's investigation into magic and the Alchemists, as well as her continuing and complex interactions with Adrian.
